Sekondi is one half of Sekondi-Takoradi, the capital of Ghana's Western Region, and the two towns have grown together along the Gulf of Guinea coast. On a map the shoreline is the defining element. Rocky headlands, small bays and beaches alternate, and the streets behind them climb gentle hills before thinning out into green land inland.
Sekondi is the older of the pair, a historic fishing and trading settlement where the Dutch built Fort Orange above the bay. Takoradi, a short distance to the west, received Ghana's first deep-water harbour in the late 1920s, and its breakwaters and quays still create the sharpest geometric shapes along this stretch of coast.
Offshore oil was discovered in 2007, and since then the area has become known as the centre of Ghana's petroleum industry, with new districts spreading along the roads between the towns.
