Blackpool is defined by its coastline. The town runs north to south along the Fylde coast of Lancashire, and on a map the Irish Sea forms a clean edge down one whole side of the sheet. Behind the seafront, terraces of Victorian guest houses fill a dense grid of short streets, and the pattern loosens further inland into suburbs, golf courses and the broad green space of Stanley Park.
Three piers reach out into the sea, North, Central and South, each a short stroke perpendicular to the shore. Between them stands Blackpool Tower, opened in 1894 and loosely modelled on the Eiffel Tower. The seafront tramway, which began operating in 1885, is one of the oldest electric tramways in the world, and its line follows the promenade for miles, with the Pleasure Beach amusement park at the southern end.
