Nancy's plan holds two cities in one. To the north lies the Ville-Vieille, the medieval town of the Dukes of Lorraine, with its winding streets around the ducal palace. To the south, Duke Charles III laid out the Ville-Neuve at the end of the sixteenth century as a regular grid of straight streets. The link between them is the chain of squares built under Stanislas Leszczyński in the eighteenth century.
Place Stanislas, Place de la Carrière and Place d'Alliance are listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and on a map they form a clear axis. Next to them the Parc de la Pépinière provides a large green block. Nancy is also the home of the École de Nancy, and its Art Nouveau houses are spread across the later districts to the west.
A Nancy map poster shows that layered plan at a glance. The Meurthe and the Marne–Rhine canal run along the eastern side, the railway cuts across to the west, and the hills rise beyond. In black and white, the contrast between the crooked medieval lanes and the ruled grid is the whole story.
