Here the Tyne runs through a deep valley, and within a short stretch it is crossed by a series of bridges, from the Tyne Bridge and the double-deck High Level Bridge to the tilting Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Each shows as a thin line pulling the two banks together.

Further north, the broad open space of the Town Moor interrupts the street pattern, and St James' Park sits at the edge of the centre.
