The Lake District is a mountainous national park in Cumbria, in northwest England. Its lakes are long and narrow, filling glacial valleys that fan out from a high central core, a pattern William Wordsworth compared to the spokes of a wheel. On the western edge the fells step down toward the Irish Sea, where the park meets the coast at Ravenglass.
Windermere is the largest natural lake in England, and Scafell Pike, at 978 metres, is the country's highest mountain. Wordsworth lived at Grasmere and Rydal, and Beatrix Potter bought farms near Hawkshead and left much of her land to the National Trust. In 2017 the Lake District was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a cultural landscape.
A Lake District map poster is shaped less by streets than by water and terrain. Windermere, Ullswater, Derwentwater and Coniston lie in their valleys, small towns such as Keswick and Ambleside sit at their heads or on their shores, and roads follow the valley floors before climbing over passes such as Hardknott and Kirkstone in tight bends.
