Apuí lies in the south of Amazonas state, on the BR-230 Transamazônica highway. The town grew from a large agricultural settlement project in the 1980s, and from above its most striking feature is the pattern of side roads branching off the main highway at regular intervals, each leading into the forest. This fishbone layout is characteristic of Amazon settlement areas.
The town itself is a compact grid of streets beside the highway, with farmland and pasture extending outward along the side roads. Apuí has become one of the areas where forest loss in the Amazon is closely monitored, and the edges of cleared land are clearly visible from above.
