Asheville lies in a broad valley in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. The French Broad River runs north through the western side of the city, and the Swannanoa River comes in from the east to join it. On the map, the streets bend around ridges and follow the creek beds, so the city looks irregular, with no single grid to organise it.
The downtown sits on a rise above the rivers and is known for its Art Deco buildings, including the tall, stepped City Hall. South of the centre, the Biltmore Estate covers a vast area of forest, fields and gardens around the Vanderbilt family's château. The Blue Ridge Parkway passes along the city's eastern and southern edges.
