Bela, often called Bela Pratapgarh, is the headquarters of Pratapgarh district in Uttar Pradesh. It stands on the Sai River, a tributary of the Gomti, in the flat and fertile country between Prayagraj and Lucknow. From above, the river traces a loose curve beside the town, and fields press in close on every side.
The street pattern is organic rather than planned, with lanes branching from a few main roads that link the town to the surrounding districts. A Bela map poster shows this dense, irregular centre against the calm line of the Sai, with the rail line cutting its own straight path.
The town takes its name from the Belha Devi temple on the banks of the Sai, a well-known place of worship in the region. Bela serves as the administrative and market centre for a largely rural district.
