Butte lies in south-western Montana, in a high valley just west of the Continental Divide. The city grew on the slopes of a hill packed with copper and other metals, and its map reflects that history: a steep grid of streets in Uptown on the hillside, spreading down to flatter neighbourhoods and the valley floor to the south. Railway lines and highways cross the lower city.
Butte was once known as the Richest Hill on Earth, and its mines made it one of the largest cities in the American West in the early twentieth century. Steel headframes still stand above old shafts across the hillside, and Uptown's historic district is one of the largest National Historic Landmark districts in the country.
East of Uptown lies the Berkeley Pit, a vast former open-pit copper mine now filled with water, which appears on the map as a huge void beside the street grid.
