Elixku lies in the Kashgar region of Xinjiang, on the broad cultivated plain north of Yarkand at the western edge of the Tarim Basin. Settlement here depends entirely on irrigation. Water from the rivers coming down from the Pamir and Karakoram is carried across the land in canals, and towns and villages grow along those lines.
On a map, this produces a very particular geometry. Long, straight roads and channels divide the land into rectangular plots, and the town appears as a denser knot where several routes meet. Beyond the fields, the lines stop abruptly: the Taklamakan Desert lies to the east, and the farmed land is an island of order at its edge.
