Gilbert lies in the southeast of the Phoenix metropolitan area, on the flat floor of the Salt River Valley. Its map is shaped by the American survey grid: major roads run one mile apart, dividing the town into square sections, and within each section residential streets curl into loops, crescents and cul-de-sacs. The result is a distinctive pattern of rigid frames filled with soft curves.
Irrigation canals inherited from the town's agricultural past run along section lines and in long diagonal stretches, giving the map thin, clean water lines through the suburbs. Loop 202, the Santan Freeway, sweeps through the south of the town. Parks, golf courses and retention basins appear as scattered open shapes, among them the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch, a wetland park of ponds and trails.
Gilbert was once known as the hay shipping capital of the world, and its small Heritage District still marks the original farm town beside the old railway. Since the late twentieth century it has grown into one of the largest incorporated towns in the United States.
