Tempe sits in the heart of the Phoenix metropolitan area, between Phoenix, Scottsdale and Mesa. Most of the city is a strict desert grid of mile-square sections and arterial roads. Near the north end, the Salt River bed crosses from east to west, and part of it has been dammed to create Tempe Town Lake. On the map it appears as a long, narrow sheet of water.
Arizona State University's main campus fills a large area just south of the lake and east of Mill Avenue, the city's traditional main street. Next to them rises Hayden Butte, known locally as A Mountain for the large letter on its slope. Light rail crosses the river and runs through downtown and the campus.
