La mappa
Nogales Map Poster & Print
Nogales, Sonora, sits directly on the border with the United States, facing its smaller namesake in Arizona. The centre lies in a narrow valley between steep hills, so streets bend to follow the terrain and many neighbourhoods climb the slopes in terraces. The international boundary cuts across the top of the map as a single straight line, one of the most distinctive features any city plan can have.
The railway and the main highway both run through the valley toward Hermosillo and the rest of Mexico, and the city has long been one of the busiest land ports for goods moving between the two countries, including large volumes of fresh produce. Factories and maquiladoras occupy flatter ground along the southern approaches.
A Nogales map poster shows how much the landscape shapes the city: winding roads in the hills, tightly packed blocks on the valley floor and the sudden change at the frontier, where the street pattern of one country stops and another begins. The name itself comes from the walnut trees that once grew in the area.

Valley floor
The historic centre and main commercial streets fill the narrow valley bottom, where the rail line and the highway run side by side.
Hillside neighbourhoods
Residential districts wrap around the surrounding hills, their streets curving along the contours in patterns that look almost like topographic lines.
