Grahamstown, officially renamed Makhanda in 2018, began in 1812 as a British military outpost on the Eastern Cape frontier. Its map still shows the colonial plan. A wide High Street runs up from Church Square, where the Cathedral of St Michael and St George stands, and a regular grid of streets fans out across a shallow valley in the hills.
Education and culture dominate the town. Rhodes University has a large campus at the top of High Street, and each winter the National Arts Festival, one of the largest arts festivals in Africa, fills the town with performances. The many church spires across the centre earned it the nickname City of Saints.
