Ithaca sits at the southern end of Cayuga Lake, the longest of New York's Finger Lakes. The land shapes the map. A flat valley floor holds the downtown grid and the Commons, while East Hill, South Hill and West Hill rise sharply on three sides. Streets that run straight in the valley start to twist and switch back as they climb, and creeks cut narrow gorges through the slopes.
Cornell University occupies East Hill, its quads and buildings spreading along the rim between Fall Creek and Cascadilla gorges. Ithaca College looks over the city from South Hill. Waterfalls within the city limits, including Ithaca Falls on Fall Creek, inspired the local slogan ‘Ithaca is Gorges’. Cayuga Inlet and a network of channels mark the low ground where the lake begins.
