Juína was founded in the late 1970s as part of a planned colonisation project in north-western Mato Grosso. It shows. The town is laid out as a deliberate grid of wide avenues and long rectangular blocks, the kind of plan drawn on paper before anyone arrived. From above, it looks like a clean geometric shape placed into a landscape of forest, pasture and meandering rivers.
Around the town, the pattern changes. Straight roads run out to farms and cleared land, and rivers loop through what forest remains. The line between the ordered town and the irregular country is unusually sharp, which makes Juína a striking subject for a monochrome print.
Among geologists, Juína is known for diamonds. Some stones from the area formed extremely deep within the Earth and are studied for what they reveal about the mantle.
