Kokstad lies in the south of KwaZulu-Natal, close to the Eastern Cape border, in the region historically known as East Griqualand. It was founded in the 1860s by the Griqua leader Adam Kok III, who led his people across the Drakensberg to settle here. The town is named after him.
The street map shows a planned town: a clear grid of blocks around the centre, with newer residential areas spreading beyond it. Mount Currie rises to the north, and open grassland and farmland stretch in all directions, giving the town a strong sense of space.
