LaGrange, the seat of Troup County in west Georgia, takes its name from La Grange, the French country estate of the Marquis de Lafayette, who visited Georgia in 1825. The link is visible at the heart of the city. Lafayette Square, with its fountain and a statue of the marquis, anchors the downtown street grid.
Streets spread from the square in a fairly regular pattern, then soften into curving residential avenues, former mill neighborhoods and the campus of LaGrange College. The mill areas reflect the textile industry that shaped the local economy for much of the twentieth century and left its own planned streets on the map.
West of the city, West Point Lake spreads its many branching arms across the landscape. The reservoir on the Chattahoochee River gives a LaGrange map poster an unusually intricate edge. Interstate 85 passes the city to the south and east, completing a composition of square, grid, water and highway.
