Valley-floor streets
The town stretches along the lowest ground available. Its main streets run in parallel bands that follow the valley rather than a planned layout.

La mappa
Lixi Map Poster & Print
Lixi lies in the far southeast of Chongqing municipality, in the hill country that runs toward the borders of Guizhou and Hunan. The terrain is steep and folded, and settlements here occupy whatever flat ground the valleys allow. This region is home to Tujia and Miao communities, and it differs markedly from the dense urban core of Chongqing itself.
From above, the town follows its valley floor. Streets run in narrow bands along the lower ground, and roads climb away in switchbacks. Farmland is terraced into the surrounding slopes, and the built-up area thins out quickly wherever the hills rise.
A Lixi map poster shows a town shaped almost entirely by landform. There is no grid to speak of. Instead there are long, bending streets, a few crossings, and wide unbuilt spaces where the mountains take over. Printed in black and white, it has the quality of a contour sketch, sparse and deliberate.

Switchback roads
Roads leaving Lixi zigzag up the surrounding slopes. They draw looping lines on the map that contrast with the straighter streets below.
Open hillsides
Much of the frame is unbuilt terrain. The emptiness around the town emphasises how tightly the settlement fits into its valley.
