Nivāri, often written Niwari, is the headquarters of Niwari district in northern Madhya Pradesh, a district created in 2018. It lies in the Bundelkhand region close to the Uttar Pradesh border, a short distance south-east of Jhansi. The town is compact. A busy centre of narrow streets sits at its heart, a railway line passes through, and roads lead out to villages across the countryside.
The best-known place in the district is Orchha, the former Bundela capital on the Betwa River, with its palaces and temples a short drive to the west. Around Nivāri itself the landscape is typical of Bundelkhand: open farmland, low rocky hills and water tanks built to hold the monsoon rains. Each shows up on the map as a distinct shape.
