Nykøbing Falster lies on the western coast of the island of Falster, on the Guldborgsund, the narrow strait that separates Falster from Lolland. From above, the strait runs as a slim channel along the edge of town, with bridges crossing it to the west. The old centre sits close to the water, with streets gradually widening into newer districts further inland.
The town has deep medieval roots, and a castle once stood here beside the strait. That period is now presented at Middelaldercentret, an open-air reconstruction of a medieval town just outside the centre. In the old town, a house where Peter the Great is said to have stayed in 1716 is still remembered locally as the Czar's House.
