Springfield sits in the southern Willamette Valley in Oregon, directly east of Eugene. The two cities are separated by the Willamette River, and the McKenzie River runs along Springfield's northern edge before joining it. From above, the town is framed by water, with a regular street grid filling the land between the rivers and wooded hills rising to the south and east.
Springfield grew as a timber and mill town, and industrial sites and rail lines still mark parts of the map. It is also widely known for a pop-culture link: Matt Groening, who grew up in nearby Portland, has said the name of the Simpsons' hometown was inspired by Springfield, Oregon.
