Aleg is the capital of Brakna region in southern Mauritania. It lies on the long highway known as the Route de l'Espoir, which runs east from Nouakchott into the interior. The road passes straight through the town and forms its main axis, with administrative buildings, markets and homes spread out on either side across level, sandy ground.
The streets are wide and laid out in a rough grid with generous space between blocks, a common pattern in Sahelian towns where land is plentiful and buildings are low. Toward the edges the grid loosens into scattered compounds and tracks that lead out across the plain, and the town fades gradually into the landscape around it.
Near Aleg lies a seasonal lake that fills after the rains and shrinks in the dry months, supporting farming and grazing in an otherwise arid region. It adds a rare soft shape among the straight lines of the map. An Aleg map poster shows a town organised around one road and one body of water, in the wide spaces of the Sahel.
