Bad Säckingen lies on the German bank of the Upper Rhine, with Switzerland directly across the water. On a map the river is the defining line. The old town sits close to its northern bank, with narrow streets around the minster, and newer districts spread up the slopes of the Black Forest foothills behind.
The town is known for its covered wooden bridge over the Rhine to Stein in Switzerland, often described as the longest covered wooden bridge in Europe. The twin-towered Fridolinsmünster honours Saint Fridolin, and Schönau Castle and its park stand near the river.
