Banyumas lies in the south-west of Central Java, on the Serayu River, one of the main rivers in the region. The town was the historic seat of the Banyumas regency before the administrative centre moved to nearby Purwokerto in the 1930s. On a map, it still reads as a traditional Javanese town, with a central square and streets arranged around it.
The Serayu flows past in wide curves, and the town sits on the flat land beside it. Beyond the built-up area, rice fields fill the valley, and green hills rise on the horizon. Roads run along the river and out toward Purwokerto and other towns in the region.
