Fujia is a town in the south of Gansu Province, in the mountainous border country where the Loess Plateau gives way to the ranges that lead toward Sichuan. This is a landscape of deep valleys and steep slopes, and towns here are shaped by the narrow strips of flat land available to them.
From above, the built-up area follows the valley floor, with the main road running along its length and streets branching off where space allows. The slopes rising on either side leave little room for expansion, so the town's outline on the map is long and slender. Terraced fields and small tracks climb the hillsides beyond the edges of town.
Southern Gansu's mountainous terrain means that road and river often share the same valley corridor, a pattern that gives local maps a strong sense of direction.
