Herisau is the seat of government of the Swiss half-canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, just west of St. Gallen. It lies in rolling pre-Alpine country, and the map reflects that terrain. Streets curve around hills, climb slopes and drop into small valleys, and the town gradually dissolves into a landscape of meadows, woods and farmhouses spread widely across the land.
This scattered settlement pattern is typical of Appenzell, where farms were built individually on their own land rather than in tight villages. Herisau's centre has older buildings around its church and square, and railway lines cross the deep stream valleys nearby on high viaducts, a reminder of how uneven the ground is.
