Jaicós is a town in the south of Piauí, in Brazil's northeastern interior. The surrounding land is semi-arid sertão: dry for much of the year, with low scrub and scattered farms, and water courses that fill mainly during the rainy season. The town sits within this wide landscape as a compact, clearly defined settlement.
Its layout follows a pattern common in the towns of the region. A main church and square sit at the centre, straight streets extend outward in a loose grid, and newer blocks gather along the roads leading in. Beyond the last houses, the map opens up almost immediately into tracks and fields.
