Jatibarang is in Indramayu Regency on the flat northern coast of West Java, a region shaped by rice growing and long irrigation works. On the map the town appears as a concentrated cluster of streets where several roads converge. Around it spreads a patchwork of paddies, divided by channels and embankments, that continues almost without interruption to the edge of the frame.
The northern Java railway passes through, and the town's station has long made it a local transport point for the regency. Around the centre the streets are short and irregular. Built-up strips extend along the roads toward neighbouring villages, so the outline is less a circle than a set of arms reaching out into the fields in several directions.
The area is also linked to oil and gas: a field bearing the Jatibarang name has been worked in the Indramayu region for decades.
