This Jinshan lies in the south-east of Gansu province, in the hilly loess country of north-west China. The landscape shapes its map almost completely. Settlement and roads follow the valley floors, while the slopes around them are cut into terraces and folded ridges. The result is a winding, linear pattern and not a compact grid.
The town is the densest part of the valley, a cluster of streets and buildings where the valley widens enough to allow it. Roads follow streams through the hills, connecting Jinshan with villages farther along the valley and with larger centres in the region. Small field plots and paths cover the slopes in a fine, irregular texture.
