Kaarst lies on the flat land west of the Rhine, between Neuss and Mönchengladbach, a short distance from Düsseldorf. On a map it is a spread of residential streets rather than a single dense core: curving cul-de-sacs, rows of terraced houses and small squares, broken up by farmland, woods and allotment gardens that reach right into the edges of the town.
The municipality brings together several former villages, with Büttgen the best known alongside Kaarst itself, and the map still shows them as distinct clusters. Motorways and railway lines cut across the landscape, and a regional rail line runs from Kaarst toward Neuss and Düsseldorf, which gives the town a clear place in the wider Rhineland network.
