Kharan lies in western Balochistan, at the edge of the Kharan Desert, a broad expanse of sand dunes and dry plains. The landscape around the town is harsh and open, bordered by ranges of bare hills. On a map, Kharan appears as a compact settlement with its streets gathered close together, surrounded by a vast area of sparse lines and empty space.
The town was once the capital of the princely state of Kharan, which later became part of Pakistan. The old centre and its fort area remain the core of the settlement. Around the town, cultivated patches depend on scarce water, and roads stretch long distances across the desert to other towns in the province.
