Liufeng lies in southeastern Gansu, a region where the loess plateau breaks into valleys, ridges and terraced slopes. On a map a place like this is shaped less by planning than by relief: the town follows the flatter ground along the valley, and the hills around it push the built-up area into a long, narrow form.
Roads follow the same logic. The main route runs along the valley, with shorter streets branching towards the slopes, and farm tracks climb away into the surrounding terraces. The resulting street pattern is linear and slightly irregular, bending wherever the land does.
