Luzern stands where Lake Lucerne narrows and drains into the Reuss, and that meeting of lake and river defines the city's plan. The old town sits on the north bank, the newer centre around the railway station on the south, and a series of bridges ties them together. Beyond, the lake spreads out in long arms between steep mountain shores.
The Kapellbrücke, a covered wooden footbridge with its stone Wasserturm, crosses the river at an angle, and further downstream the Spreuerbrücke does the same. Along the hill above the old town runs the Musegg Wall, with its line of towers. A Luzern map poster shows all three features, together with the lakefront promenades.
Luzern is known as one of Switzerland's most visited cities, with the Lion Monument carved into a rock face and Mount Pilatus rising to the southwest. The KKL concert hall sits right on the water by the station, marking the point where river and lake meet.
