Muhe lies in eastern Gansu, in the heavily eroded landscape of the Loess Plateau. In this kind of country, towns tend to sit on valley floors or flat terraces, and roads follow the contours of the land instead of cutting straight across it. From above, the built-up area appears as a compact cluster, with lanes and farm tracks reaching out into the surrounding fields and gullies.
The terrain dominates any map of the area. Loess landscapes are defined by deep ravines, stepped fields and ridgelines that twist and branch, and the roads that link one settlement to the next have to thread along them. That gives the street pattern an organic, meandering quality quite different from the grids of the lowland plains.
