Paulistana is a municipality in the southern part of Piauí, in Brazil's semi-arid interior near the border with Pernambuco. The landscape around it is caatinga, the dry scrub forest of the Northeast. Rain is scarce, and settlements are spaced far apart.
The town itself is compact. A fairly regular grid of streets gathers around a central area, and the blocks thin out quickly at the edges into open land. Highways and rural roads lead away across the plateau towards farms and neighbouring towns, and those long lines give the map its sense of distance.
