Požarevac lies in eastern Serbia on the fertile plain between the Velika Morava and the Danube. On a map the town has a clear centre, with streets radiating out and then settling into a fairly regular grid in the newer districts. The land is flat, and the town gives way to farmland on every side, with the Danube a short distance to the north.
The town is known in European history for the Treaty of Passarowitz, signed here in 1718 between the Habsburg and Ottoman empires and their allies. Nearby are the remains of Viminacium, a major Roman city and military camp. Požarevac is also home to Ljubičevo, a stud farm that holds an annual equestrian event.
