Xinxing lies in the southeast of Gansu, in the hilly loess country of the upper Wei River basin. In this landscape, towns grow along valley floors, because the surrounding slopes are steep and cut by gullies. From above, Xinxing follows that pattern. Its streets fill the flatter ground, and the land around it rises in folds and ridges.
The map captures this contrast clearly. The built area has a regular structure, while the terrain around it is irregular and heavily shaped by erosion and terracing. Roads follow the valleys instead of cutting straight across, and they give the town a stretched, linear shape.
