Xiyu lies in southeastern Gansu, in mountainous country where the Loess Plateau meets the ranges further south. From above, the town is a narrow settlement strung along a valley floor. A river and the main road run side by side, and steep slopes rise on both sides, often cut by terraced fields and gullies.
In this part of Gansu, the land leaves little flat ground, so towns grow in long, thin shapes that follow the valleys. Farming depends on terraces carved into the hillsides, and small villages sit on ledges and side valleys linked by winding tracks.
A Xiyu map poster captures this valley geometry. The town forms a slender band of streets beside the river, and the terrain around it appears as a pattern of gullies, tracks and terraces.
