Zărnești lies in Brașov County at the point where the Bârsa lowland meets the mountains. The map shows the change clearly. The town's streets spread across flat ground to the east, while to the west the road network ends abruptly at the steep limestone ridge of Piatra Craiului.
The town is the main gateway to Piatra Craiului National Park. A road leads west from the centre into the Zărnești Gorge, a narrow limestone canyon that hikers walk on the way to the ridge. On the map, that road is a thin line squeezed between steep slopes.
A Zărnești map poster frames a small industrial town against a large natural backdrop. A bear sanctuary nearby, which takes in bears rescued from captivity, has also made the area known to visitors from outside Romania.
