Büdingen lies on the eastern edge of the Wetterau in Hesse, at the foot of the Vogelsberg uplands. It has one of the best-preserved medieval town fortifications in Germany, and on the map the old town is unmistakable: a compact, closed shape of narrow streets enclosed by a continuous line of walls, towers and gates.
The most famous of these is the Jerusalem Gate, a massive late-Gothic gate from the early sixteenth century with two round towers. Within the walls stands Büdingen Castle, the residence of the Princes of Ysenburg and Büdingen, which has grown over the centuries from a moated castle into a large, irregular complex.
A Büdingen map poster shows the sharp contrast between the dense, enclosed medieval core and the looser growth outside the walls. The Seemenbach stream runs close by, and newer streets spread out across the gentle hills. Wooded slopes close the view toward the east.
A nearly complete ring of medieval walls and towers encloses the old town, drawing one of the clearest historic outlines of any German town.
The monumental twin-towered gate marks the main entrance to the walled town, a strong landmark within the dense historic street pattern.
The irregular castle complex sits inside the old town, its courtyards and wings forming a distinctive shape among the medieval streets.

Cur Büdingen
Büdingen appeals to anyone who loves medieval towns, half-timbered streets and history that is still visible on the ground. A map of its walled core makes a thoughtful gift for locals, visitors and couples who married in the town.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with names or a wedding date. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper gives the walled core the look of an old town plan.
