Valley-floor streets
The town’s streets follow the flatter ground of the valley, giving the settlement an elongated shape that responds to the land rather than a grid.

Gaolou Map Poster & Print
Gaolou lies in the southeastern part of Gansu province, in the loess highlands of western China. This is a landscape of deeply eroded hills, terraced slopes and narrow valleys, where settlements naturally gather on the flatter ground along streams. On the map, that shapes everything: streets follow the valley floor rather than a planned grid.
Roads trace the valleys and switch back up the slopes, connecting the town to neighbouring villages and county centres. Around the built-up area the land breaks into fields and terraces that follow the contours of the hills. The result is an organic, linear settlement pattern very different from the planned districts of China’s larger cities.
A Gaolou map poster renders that relationship between terrain and town in simple black lines. The streets gather where the land flattens, and the roads beyond curve with the hills. It is a restrained image of a rural place in the loess country, well suited to anyone with family roots in this part of Gansu.

Winding hill roads
Roads leaving town bend and switch back through the loess hills, drawing curving lines that contrast with the compact centre.
Loess terrain
The surrounding highlands are shaped by erosion and terracing, and field boundaries follow the contours, framing the town with a soft, layered pattern.
