Aarau is the capital of the canton of Aargau, in northern Switzerland, on the River Aare at the foot of the Jura hills. The old town sits on a rocky rise above the river. The old town is known for its painted roof eaves, and Aarau is sometimes called the town of beautiful gables. The city has a notable place in Swiss history: in 1798 it served briefly as the first capital of the Helvetic Republic. Albert Einstein attended the cantonal school here before going on to study in Zurich.
