The map
Agen Map Poster & Print
Agen sits on the right bank of the Garonne in the Lot-et-Garonne department, halfway between Bordeaux and Toulouse. The old town is a close pattern of narrow streets and small squares near the river. Wider boulevards and the railway run along its edges, and to the north the ground rises toward the wooded Ermitage hill.
The most memorable feature on the map is the Canal de Garonne. It runs through town and crosses the river on the Pont-canal d'Agen, a stone aqueduct of twenty-three arches that carries boats high above the water. Agen is also known across France for its prunes and for its rugby club, which has been a fixture of the French game for generations.
An Agen map poster shows two waterways meeting at a right angle: the broad natural curve of the Garonne and the straight engineered line of the canal. Between them lie the tight old town and the modern districts beyond. It makes a clear, satisfying image for anyone who knows the south-west.

Garonne bank
The wide river forms the western edge of the town. Bridges and quays line it, and flat land on the far bank opens toward farmland.
Old town core
Near the river, narrow medieval streets and small squares create a dense, irregular web. Later boulevards and railway lines frame it on the outside.
