The railroad grid
Long avenues and even cross streets reflect the town's planned railroad beginnings, forming a tidy rectangular pattern across the flat basin floor.

The map
Alamogordo Map Poster & Print
Alamogordo lies on the eastern edge of the Tularosa Basin in southern New Mexico, right where the Sacramento Mountains rise from the desert floor. The town was laid out in 1898 as a railroad town, and the map still shows that origin: a straight, orderly grid with long north–south avenues set parallel to the foot of the mountains.
The area is closely tied to aerospace and testing. Holloman Air Force Base lies just west of town, and the New Mexico Museum of Space History sits on the slopes above it. White Sands National Park, with its gypsum dunes, lies across the basin to the southwest. Alamogordo is also known for the 1983 burial of unsold Atari game cartridges in its landfill.
An Alamogordo map poster holds a strong contrast. On one side is the clear, measured desert grid. On the other, the streets break into winding roads and canyons as the land climbs. Open basin fills the space between, leaving a clean, minimal image well suited to black and white.

Mountain edge
To the east the regular grid gives way to curving roads and canyons as the Sacramento Mountains rise, a sudden change in texture on the map.
Open basin
West of town the Tularosa Basin opens into wide, largely empty land toward the base and the dunes, giving the poster generous white space.

Why Alamogordo
A map that means something
Alamogordo is home to many military families and people linked to the space and research world, and many move on after a posting. A map of the town is a clean keepsake of time spent between the mountains and the white sand.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be changed, for example to record a posting or a year, and the map is available in Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Sand echoes the desert, and Blueprint suits the precise grid.
