Castle rock
The castle complex sits on a raised outcrop above the centre. The streets curve around its base, making it an obvious anchor in the composition.

The map
Altenburg Map Poster & Print
Altenburg lies in eastern Thuringia, close to the border with Saxony. It is a hilly town rather than a flat one. The castle stands on a rock outcrop above the centre, and the streets below climb, bend and branch around the uneven ground. A large pond, the Großer Teich, sits beside the town and shows as a clear open shape on the map.
For centuries Altenburg was the seat of a duchy, and the castle, market squares and residence-era buildings still anchor its layout. The town is best known as the home of Skat, the card game invented here in the early nineteenth century. Playing-card making has a long local tradition, and there is a museum devoted to it.
An Altenburg map poster shows an old town that follows the land instead of a grid: the castle high on its rock, irregular squares below it, the pond to one side and later districts spreading outward across the gentle hills.

Großer Teich
The large pond near the centre, with parkland beside it, gives the map a calm open area against the tighter streets of the old town.
Winding old town
Lanes and squares follow the slopes instead of straight lines, forming an irregular, hand-drawn pattern typical of an old residence town.
