Oval old town
The medieval core forms a nearly closed oval, bounded by walls and a ring of green. It is one of the clearest historic town shapes in Bavaria.

The map
Amberg Map Poster & Print
Amberg, in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria, has one of the most complete medieval town plans in Germany. On the map, the old town is a clear oval, still mostly enclosed by its walls and gates, and ringed by a green belt where the moat once ran. The river Vils flows straight through the middle and divides it into two halves.
The best-known sight is the Stadtbrille, the town's spectacles. It is a double-arched structure that carries the old fortifications across the Vils, and its arches reflect in the water as two round lenses. Amberg grew rich on iron mining and trade in the Middle Ages. East of the town, the Mariahilfberg rises with its pilgrimage church.
An Amberg map poster makes the most of that oval. Its outline is crisp in black and white, and the Vils cuts through it cleanly. Newer districts spread outward and the hill rises beyond. It is an especially graphic plan, with the old town at the centre looking almost like a seal.

Vils and Stadtbrille
The river runs straight through the old town. Where it leaves the walls, the double arches of the Stadtbrille span the water.
Mariahilfberg
A wooded hill rises east of the centre, with winding roads leading up to the pilgrimage church. It gives the edge of the map a softer, contoured texture.

Why Amberg
A map that means something
Amberg appeals to anyone who lived inside those walls, studied at the university of applied sciences, or simply loves a legible medieval plan. The oval gives the poster a natural focal point.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with a date or a family name. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Paper suits the historic plan especially well.
