The map
Avola Map Poster & Print
Avola lies in the province of Syracuse in southeastern Sicily, close to the Ionian Sea. The town was destroyed by the earthquake of 1693 and rebuilt on a new site nearer the coast. It was given an unusual design: a hexagonal plan with a central square and streets arranged in a regular grid within the six-sided outline.
That geometry is what makes Avola stand out on a map. The original hexagon is still readable at the center of the town, even as later neighborhoods have grown around it. Between the town and the sea lies a strip of farmland and a coastal district. Behind it, the land rises toward the Hyblaean hills, cut by deep gorges.
Avola is known for its almonds and gave its name to the Nero d'Avola grape, now grown throughout Sicily. An Avola map poster centers on the unusual planned core, surrounded by the looser growth of the modern town and the line of the coast. In print, the hexagon is a rare and satisfying shape, a piece of eighteenth-century urban design visible at a glance.

Central piazza
The main square sits at the heart of the hexagon. Straight streets lead to it from each side, forming a clear, symmetrical focal point.
Ionian shoreline
A short distance from the town, the coast runs in a long, gentle line. It adds a calm edge of open water to the composition.

Why Avola
A map that means something
Avola's hexagon attracts people who love urban design as much as those with Sicilian roots. On a wall, it is both a map and an abstract geometric print.
Customize the title and subtitle, perhaps with a family name or 1693, and keep or edit the coordinates. Sand and Paper suit Sicilian stone, while Blueprint emphasizes the plan. The HD files come in six sizes.
