Barcelos lies on the Rio Negro in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, far upriver from Manaus. The town is a narrow strip of streets running parallel to the riverbank, with the forest close behind it. Near the town the Rio Negro spreads out into the Mariuá archipelago, often counted among the largest river archipelagos in the world, a maze of islands and channels.
