The map
Béziers Map Poster & Print
Béziers stands on a ridge above the river Orb in the Languedoc, with the Cathedral of Saint-Nazaire at its highest point. From above, the old town is a tight knot of lanes spilling down the slope towards the river, where the medieval Pont Vieux crosses the water. The contrast between the dense hilltop and the open river valley shapes the whole map.
The Canal du Midi passes the city to the south and west, and one of its best-known features is here: the Fonserannes locks, a staircase of locks that lifts boats up the hillside. Nearby, the canal crosses the Orb on an aqueduct. The Béziers map poster shows these waterways as distinct lines, one natural and one engineered.
Pierre-Paul Riquet, the engineer behind the Canal du Midi, was born in Béziers, and the broad Allées Paul Riquet runs through the centre in his name. This long, tree-lined promenade appears as a strong, straight axis among the irregular streets of the old town.

The Orb and its bridges
The river runs below the old town, crossed by the medieval Pont Vieux and later bridges that link the two banks of the city.
Allées Paul Riquet
A wide promenade cuts straight through the centre, forming a clear axis that contrasts with the winding lanes of the historic quarter.
